Default 85/85.5 Transmission differences. TellTales by just looking?

I'm looking for a new transmission for my 87 S. The NA-post 85.5 is hard to come by. The reason I cannot use an earlier model (or a 924 unit) is that the sender isn't on the early transmissions.

I may have found one- where is the speed sender located? On the exhaust side above the CV? Or is there a code that can set me straight?

The speed sensor is located in the driver side front above the transmission. The code is on top front of the transmission bell housing and you most likely will not be able to see it unless you get real creative with a mirror and flashlight or remove the transmission.

S transmissions have slightly taller gearing as well.

The transmission in on the ground so the code is east to get to... If the sensor is where I think it is, then I'm looking at a later model.

I've given up looking for an S transmission. Hard enough to get a non-turbo unit. Besides, the shorter gearing of the NA will help on-track.

True. Try to find an 88 or 89 N/A transmission as they have a shorter 5th as well.

It's even tough to find a NA transmission local. Oddly, the most used transmissions are turbo units.

Makes me think the NA cars are going wholesale for scrap while the wrecked turbo cars are getting parted out.

That is indeed... looks like it's a late-model unit.
Now to get some scratch to pay for it!

If you can get a "J" transmission it will probably last longer than a "K", but if you are in a bind and they aren't plentiful, either one will work.
