Default Deal....or No Deal

Talked today to the owner of the following looking to sell:

86 NA, recent belts, rollers, brakes, 81K miles. Car is in the south, no rust, originally from AZ. Lots of maint. records. Inoperative AC, needs a clutch. Nice paint, cloth interior, phone dials. $4K.

Any thoughts from the experts?

BTW, anyone have the website address for AIR? I think that whatever I buy it's going to "need" a 951 nose and an *** valence.

If the a/c matters to you, it can cost anywhere from $75 for a recharge or $3-400 for a new compressor or other misc. a/c related parts.

Clutch job will cost you anywhere from $1000-1500 depending who you take it to. If that car had a good clutch then i would say $4k sounds reasonably fair, but subtract the $1000-1500 for a clutch job and you will get what i would probably pay for it ($2500-3000).

This also depends on your area aswell.

If it indeed needs a clutch, I would offer closer to 3K. If you can install it yourself, figure about $650 for the necessary parts, add 700-1,000 if you have a shop install it.
As for the 951 body parts, you can probably find a used rear valance for $100-$200. The nose piece, however is another story. You pretty much need to entire front clip off a 951 (fenders, header panel, etc.,etc.)
Fiberwerks has a pretty nice looking front valance for a n/a here: www.fiberwerks.com
I'm hoping to install one of these over the winter.

Good luck!

Sounds like you really want a 951. Why not save a bit more and go for one.

Unless something else comes up between now and Friday it looks as though I'll be flying south to pick this one up and drive back.

I would say that is high for what you are getting. Also, icat has a point. If you want a 951, a couple more bucks will do it. If you just want the look, that's a whole different story. However, I went on www.cars.com and found a coulpe within 20 secs.

I'd love to get a 951 but at this point in my life with 2 kids in college I'm not looking for the added service complexity that comes with a turbo. (Now when they're out....that's a different story) . Thanks for posting the two listings. One has an automatic tranny and the other is 600 more with 20K more miles. I figure I'll have a 944 with 81K a new clutch and a documented service history for $4k (car) $1.3K (clutch). I can fiddle with the air over the winter / spring.

dont pay 4k for a car that needs a new clutch
thats what I did and I regret it... kinda.
Offer 3k and he'll bargin for 3.5, which is not a bad deal.
you could also look around the classifieds section, there are quite a few 944 n/a's available from reputable rennlisters/

I think $4000 is too much for a 944 that needs a clutch. Even if there are documents. Unless the paint is perfect and the interior is spotless, you shouldn't spend more than $3000 or $3500 tops. Remember if the clutch is bad you might have trouble driving it back.

I also found item # 27003556207 on ebay. I would make an offer if you like it. Clean car and needs nothing according to the seller. Of course, let the buyer beware and have a PPI done. I know you were thinking about my car, but it is obviously out of your price range. However, don't just jump into a car that has a problem without a PPI first. The repair history does not mean a thing if the mechanic did not know what he was doing.

BTW, I posted only 2 of the listings I found on www.cars.com. This is only one site and there were a bunch more. Take your time and be patient...you might just be glad you did. And FRporscheman was right, you may just have an issue getting home.

We are here to help you, not hinder you. We all want you to be happy with your car and just want to keep you from making a costly mistake that some Renn people have made and are gracious to share with us.
