Yes, it is the 83 and early 84 that had the forged pistons. Look at the build date on the car.

The S block, is different than the 83. You have different passages in the 16V block for the different head.

My info comes straight from my owners manuals. I believe everyone assumes that the '87s had the same comp ratio as the '86's and earlier models. However paragon also lists the horsepower ratings as the same, which is incorrect. '83s had 143 hp, 137.1 ft lb of torque, '87s had 147 hp, 140 ft lb torque. Trust me on the 9.7:1 compression ratio, its in the 944 spec book as well as the owners manuals.

I must have the same book as 944CS - it shows the later M44.07/08 engines as having a 9.7:1 cr. The head and pistons look slightly different too. I expect the hp increase had more to do with the cam than the cr.
