I changed mine. It had lots of "stuff" clogging the screen, so it was a good thing to do. I got a new screen and gasket from the dealership.
Easy project. Drive car untill the fuel level is almost empty. Under the car, at the bottom of the fuel tank, locate the fuel line that goes from the tank to the fuel pump. Remove the connection of this fuel line at the fuel pump. Have bucket ready and drain the remaining fuel from the tank, into the bucket. Next remove the fuel line connection at the tank. This is where the pre-filter screen in located. Unscrew pre-filter screen from the bottom of the fuel tank. Install new pre-filter screen and gasket in reverse order.

I recently did the one in my wifes '82 928, same sort of thing. I'd almost recommend this as "preventive maintenance" as a lot of the gaskets and fuel hoses by the tank are about 20 years old now.
