Default Major failure in transmission... What is it now???

On track (not drags) tonight, I'd shifted into 3rd and the tranny started to clang and beat like a drive shaft had failed.

Looks like the diff is locked and won't even roll with the car in neutral or with the clutch in. It's not a limited slip unit.

So... what's wrong? What parts? What else to replace while I'm in there?

My guess is that you grenaded your R&P gear -- seems to happen quite frequently to 944 trannies that are put to heavy use. If you drain your tranny fluid and see metal flakes, that's a pretty good indication. Your best bet (in my opinion) is to get a used tranny and swap it out. If you go that route, you might consider an LSD tranny b/c they seem to grenade less frequently.

I had similar noises before and my tranny looked like this:

Had your been making a humming noise before it failed? Sounded like a fuel pump failing. I'd heard that sound and it went away after a day.

I'll drain the fluid and look for debris. Now I have to remove the axle to get it back to rolling forward and into the garage.

No humming sound that I noticed or remember -- though I could always hear my tranny (stripped out interior). Good luck!

I'm going to try to get in there this week and see what's the damage.
Looks like I'm going to earn ms stripes on this one. Luckily, 44parts and more and Zims are pretty close to me. I'll at least take the crapped tranny out myself.

Thank goodness for the internet... at least I won't sound like a dope when people ask what failed.
