Smile crancase oil leak

I have a friend who is a long time Porsche mechanic, with over 40 years experience on mostly the air cooled cars. He has started doing work on 944, 968, and 928's the last few years. He has run into an oil leak problem on a 1986 944 turbo. It appears to be a leak between the pan and the flywheel area that mimics a rear main seal. But, this leak only happens when the car is not running. After it sits awhile it begins to leak in this area. He pulled the pan, doing all the work that is necessary to do so, lowered the main bearing housing assy, making sure that it was sealed properly, installed new gaskets, etc., in other words properly sealing up the bottom end. Now, when the car is run on a hoist so it can be monitored, it does not leak while running, but after being shut off, and sitting for awhile, the drip begins. It is, by the way, not coming from anything up above, i.e., from the cam/valve cover area. Before he goes to the work of removing all the necessary parts in order to replace the rear main oil seal, he was wondering if any of you wonderful 944 folks had some suggestions. Thanks for any help and suggestions you might render. Tom Johnson tjohnson14@mindspring.com
