Default Early 944, rear alxe nut torque value-Please confirm

Hello All,
I recently replaced the rear wheel bearings on my 1984 944.

I have spent some time searching the archives, but am finding some conflicting information.

If anyone has access to a Porsche Factory Service Manual, I would like to confirm what the rear alxe torque is for an EARLY, STEEL TRAILING ARM 944.

Many thanks,
Todd

The manual says 280 + 52 ft/lb for castellated axle nut on the steel arms. I did the 83 at 300# with no issues.

i thought the late arms were the high torque, and the old arms were the lower torque......i torqued mine to the amount that i found on here about 3-4 years ago, and am now changing the same side again due to a broken bearing hub on the more expensive outer rear bearing. clarks garage isnt coming up for me to check there.......and hope i can find more to confirm this number.

I concur. My source (the Haynes 944 repair manual) states 280 to 332 Ft-lbs for the steel trailing arm (which is what your 1984 has).

The reason for the range of torque is that once you get to 280 ft-lbs, the slots in the castle nut may not be aligned with the hole in the stub axle. In order to line it up, you should tighten the nut, not loosen it. I think when I did it on my mom's 1984 944, I got it to 310 or 320.
