It's almost impossible to "turn" the TPS adjustment screws on the S without pulling the IM, nickg. And the TPS only tells the DME two things about throttle plate angle, throttle closed and throttle wide open. And when the throttle closed switch is misadjusted the idle usually bounces.

exactly..this is why i sugested testing the throttle switch. I found that to be a commonly tampered with item. if they turned the stop in..it will never see closed position...i cannot tell you how many VW's i have seen like that

...not many people would remove an S intake manifold to "tamper" with the TPS, in my opinion (it's an S, not a VW). But, yeah, test it since it's easy. Measure continuity at the DME connector. Follow the DME-Diagnosis/Troubleshooting guide in FSM.
