Default squealing 5th gear and 3 years of storage

I'm looking into a 1989 944 N/A. Second owner is selling it, 150,000 miles. "5th gear started squealing" in 2003 and it has been in storage ever since. Moon roof and A/C don't work, big surprise, but there is a ton of information floating around about that. My main question is....5th gear is a floating gear and it is pretty common that they make a lot of noise, right? What kind of repair are we talking about here? Also, if it has been sitting up for three years, what kind of stuff should I do before I even test drive it?

I have never heard of a squealing 5th gear. I don't think its common.

I saw this on e-bay as well. You'll have to get a PPI to determine exactly what the problem is.
You are relying on an ill-informed owner's diagnosis.

I've got a flatbed trailer and a nearby porsche dealership. Think I'm set. I'm going to go have a look at it tomorrow, I'll let you know how it goes.

My old 87' 944 had a bad 5th gear. There was tons of gear lash and noise when you put it in 5th. The guy I sold it to ended up putting another transmission in it. I do remember though one time when I changed the fluid in it there were little chunks of metal etc. coming out of the drain hole, not pretty to say the least.

went and saw it today. didnt get to use 5th, but car does squeak in reverse...it makes same sound when turning. i think the bearings/cvs are bad. tranny makes a bit of noise in neutral, but not bad. And on another note...power steering fluid lines that have bad clamps and leak, rotting out ball joints....where are they exactly?
