You described pretty much the V8 conversion I really want, a smog legal sleeper. The only thing I would do is use the corvette alum torque tube and 6 speed to make sure nothing breaks in the long run. Its more than I am willing to spend. If you want to make it OBDII compliant, you most likely need to get a parts car or it may just nickel and dime you to death. My friend and real estate agent (former 944 spec racer) had an 87 turbo converted in that way and his friend made a california street legal (probably the first one in the state) OBDII compliant car. Scott from Renegade used their cars as prototypes to make his conversion kit and came down to tow the 87 turbo chassis since I owned it before my friend bought it for the conversion. Maybe you want to talk to the guys who did the conversion.

Why is going OBDII an issue? If you buy a low mile Junkyard LS-1, it will have the factory computer. Keep the cats and computer, and you'll be safe. Just wire the thing the same as you would a late model Camaro or Corvette. Plus theres plenty of CA Smog legal go-fast bits for those cars, just apply them to your car.

Shoot, you can get a brand new, in the crate, with warrenty 400Hp LS-2 for $5500.

Good luck with the project and keep us gear-heads updated (I might want to do this when/if my motor blows up)

OBDII compliant means much more than the computer and cats. You also have the figure for the stock exhaust manifolds with secondary air injection, providing an OBDII diagnostic plug under the dash, and the ever-popular evaporative emissions. There are pressure sensors in the evap system to check for leaks. That means that I will have to install those sensors in the fuel tank and evap system and make the system completely sealed. There is a lot more to it, but that is the majority. I'll get it worked out, and I have all the time in the world. My wife and I have decided that this project will be a slow one. In the mean time, I'll have fun driving my 951.

If you are very serious about this project, I can put you in touch with people who have done it to save time. I see a few wrecked camaros/firebirds and corvettes fairly often in the salvage auctions and can pick up a whole v8 camaro for less than $3k.

Well you learn something new every day. I started probing a bit deeper and Renegade's site has a page detailing whats required to make the car CA legal.

Again, good luck, I look forward to seeing the progress.

do the ls1 and use this engine:

At Nelson Racing Engines our slogan is "We Make Horsepower." How do we go about doing this? It just may have something to do with our reputation for building the baddest twin turbo beasts on the market. From streetable 1500hp monsters to a 3000hp 700cid behemoth - we mean business.

"HAVE YOUR CAKE AND EAT IT TOO" Finally you can have it all: a reliable car that drives nice on pump gas and sounds docile, but when you hit the loud pedal - Hold On! You've never felt power like this! These beasts feel like they pull harder in 3rd and 4th then they do in 1st gear. With packages from 1000-3000hp - you can haze the tires up to and over 100mph!

Over the years NRE has become notorious for building high-tech, huge-horsepower twin turbo "dyno-killers". These motors have been featured in such rides as Mark Steilow's pro-touring media sweetheart, "Malitude," and will be featured on Discovery Channel's American Hotrod in January of 2005.

$1700 for an S head adn $450 for cams? Sounds like a heck of alot more than I would expect.

Then again I am used to 8v NA prices. What not look to see how much it will really cost for a 16v head and cams. I have to think you can do better.

Wow...thats fugly.

As for the 16V head dilemma, how "hard" would it be to just ditch the 16V head entirely and go to 8V head?

Would it bolt on with the 16V pistons or are the valve pockets wrong??

I'm just thinking "cheap & easy" if it would work, buy an 8v head and put the car back together as a runner and sell it... I dunno tho.

Post pics of your broken part on the head. Im a certifried (yes certiFRIED) TIG weldor I would like to see how "bad" the broken boss is...

Why not just get rid of the 944S and look for a 944 that's already been converted to v8? They apparently are kinda cheap, and it will save you loads of money instead of doing the conversion yourself. Sure, you might have to wait until you find one (a good one, at least) on ebay, but that might be a better course of action.

I am sure if its OBDII certified LS1, it will be over $12k.

I don't see where ya'll are finding these prices? On ebay a good running ls1 with about 15-20k miles is around 3800-5000. Then the renegade kit costs 2100 and that's without headers which are another $749, and then unless your gonna runn your stock radiator and fans (which would be dumb) u would have to buy their cooling kit which is $899. Power steering? thats another $75 for the lines, and fuel injection harness for $450, then computer programming starts at $325. Also Renegade is notorious for being extremely slow on shipping and like to point fingers when things go wrong. I don't see how people are saying that it would be the same price to fix the porsche engine, going the porsche route will be waaaayyyyyy cheaper.

If you really want to keep the car, I think it would be far more cost effective to do a 951 motor swap.
