Vacuum leak
My 83 944 suddenly became hard to start, idles rough, runs better at higher revs, seems like vacuum leak. I did find a rubber elbow on a thin vacuum line with a cut in it, I replaced that, no improvement. Just how does on find a vacuum leak? Any help appreciated,

The only way I know is on A/C systems some places use fluorescent dye and then shine a UV lamp over the a/c hoses to see where the dye comes out. Unfortunately I don't know of anything like this for regular engine hoses.

1st option, use a tube/hose or cardboard from a roll of papertowels and put it to your ear to listen around for a leak or
2nd option, spray wd40 or carb cleaner (least messy the better) on vaccum lines while engine is at idle, rpm's will change when you hit the leak. careful around the sparks though

Either way, don't do it in a garage or around open flames, or let any accelerant or gas on the exhaust manifold. Think safety first.
