In addition to what's already been said... flashlight. Always have one in the car, check the batteries.

Cash and credit cards don't hurt :P

I haven't had enough seat time in the 924S requiring 'saving your butt' Porsche tools, however returning from Toronto to Montreal with my Jetta required some roadside work. It's has a tendency to stress the wires running from the alternator, breaking connectors etc. As it is a turbo diesel once it's started it doesn't need power, except for the accessories. I drove it on the highway for 2 hours with a dead battery until I could get to a parts place, hauled out the toolbox that I always have in the trunk and fixed it in 30 mins. Comments from my friends were: "Wow, this is the first time I've seen somebody have the tools to fix their own car on the road."

I definitely always carry a Swiss Army Knife. I cannot begin to explain the numerous times it has helped me out of a bind.

alordofchaos, flashlights are great. Except the AZ summers have killed 3 of my flashlights!! And yes Sean, my luck has kind of sucked lately. Your three bags of tools make me jealous!!! I think you have enough in there to do everything short of dropping the engine.

The tool bags come from never having a solid home for more than three months, I have a roll away and compressor at "the home I'm never at," so they pretty much just sit in disarray full of all my standard tools I need for the Chevelle.
I just registered for my last academic term so I will be done and gragitated in December and will have an address for more than 3 months at a time.

Yeah, well it will be good when you get back in December. I'm thinking we hit up Mt. Lemon. And Nimbus afterwards, hooray Monkey Shine!

Leatherman, ratcheting wrenches, tie wraps, spool of wire,

my brother! (assistants are awesome)

I've never been stranded by any of my cars. Two p-cars and an old Mercedes. Treat them right and they'll treat you right. The most valuable tool for me (except my bro) has been preventive maintenance.
