Default using silicone sealant on oil seal?

I'm just thinking of doing this for the lower balance shaft seal. Reason is that I took the old oil seal out and took the lower balanceshaft support out and I can see that on the surface of the oil seal housing where the oil seal pops in and seals with the housing, there are too parts close to the front edge that have raised parts and one part is kind of pitted, looks like someone previously damaged it with something.

I'll try and post a pic but you probably won't see what I'm saying.

would using silicone sealant be risky? I'm scared that it might break off and get into the oil and clog something up.

I don't know if it's a good idea to file down the raised spot and edge.

Yeah, on all 3 of my 944s (the 968 counts as a 944) the balance shaft had some longitudinal play, like several millimeters. I don't know about the silicone, but it sounds unnecessary.

oh mine is way more than several milimiters it pulls out like a few cms then pushes back in, this is when the support cover is removed.

I think I'll use the silicone on this one just incase it leaks, I really don't want to do it twice.

Oh right, with the front support removed it should have a lot more play. It sounds like it's OK but if you're doubtful, ask a local Rennlister to come check it out real quick. There are a bunch of members in the Vancouver area.
