Default How bad did I get ripped off? / parts Qs.

Well I went down to Weissach in vancouver which I have goen to before to order parts but never for my 944. so anyways I had the receipt from my previous owner and he had gotten the belts/ rollers / water pump all for 395 much less than the list price.

However this guy sold me everything at the "list" price. I paid total with tax $750 for a rebuild late style water pump, nuts/ bolts washers, oil seal kit (150), drive sleeve, crank cam gear, 2 races, thermostat.

that's it, I decided to order the belts and rollers from Paragon products.

Oh a new water pump weissach told me was $800 bucks! He also told me that the balance shaft belt was $200 bucks, timing belt $50. timing belt was just a conti. Obviously I did not pay for those.

After I get the car running i will have to go to the shop and have them replace the cam gear and seal as I don't want to try and remove that cheesehead bolt.

I'm pretty sure I also need to replace the balance shaft sprocket on the crankshaft but I think he said that costs $250 bucks same with the camshaft sprocket about 250. the small crank sprocket was 50. they all have sharp edges so i think they need to be replaced.

Oh and my seal kit which they had in stock has the wrong camshaft main seal and it has another seal which I found is for the early 944 crank seal also comes with the late crank seal but not the late cam seal.

oh and it has 4 O rings the smallest I'm guessing goes onto the crank drive sleeve? but then the guy has put two "99970728340" Rubber O ring on my receipt, I did a search and found that this is a rank O ring I don't get why he has it listed twice.... I think maybe it's also used on the new style pump?

Also I looked in clarks garage for the new style pump parts for the thermostat and I have a part "95110615500" "thermostat seal" , which is not listed on clarks garage and I have the thermostat O ring missing from Clarks parts numbers for the themostat so I thought maybe this is the O ring just a different number?

Also for the balance shaft races the part number I have is 92810513902 "Camshaft Spacer", 2 of these, are the same for both balance shafts?

I've heard of garages doing women this way, because they think they are naive, but..........
I just did all this myself and I got most everything from Zim's and Vertex for ALOT cheaper than that. And if you follow Clark's, the camshaft bolt is no big deal.

Ouch I have new waterpumps for about $120. Typically if you can find the entire kit for (with new waterpump) for less than $450-500, you are doing pretty good

I ordered:

Hood struts
Three different radiator hoses
Radiator mounts X 4
All rollers
Balance and timing belts
Bosch copper plugs
Waterpump gasket
Oil cooler seal kit

With shipping and state sales tax we paid less than $400 from Paragon for all this stuff - I would call them next.

It's not unusual for shops to charge 'list prices'. They typically won't accept customer supplied parts, either. In addition to the shop rate, that's just another way in which they make money to stay in business.

DIY is so much better....

I'm doing all this myself 750 was just for parts, not including belts androllers (just water pump, seals, races/ nuts / bolts/ thermostat).

i don't think I'm ever going to get parts from Weissach again, Paragon would have been way cheaper, thats where I'll get my belts/ rollers from.

Weissach was telling me $200 for the balance shaft belt..... I think I got screwed over by this new parts guy, I have bought parts before and it was usually Andrew and this older german guy but this time some younger guy was doing the order and he also took like 45 minutes to do this.

He probably thought I was some dumb young guy who doesn't know anything and he can sell me a belt for $200 bucks. After I told him that my previous owner paid 30 bucks fo the belt from the same place he said something stupid about probably having an over stock of belts then and then he said maybe he got a discount for having a PCA membership.

I just don't know where else to get some parts, for example I want to replace the cam sprocket/ crank balance shaft sprocket and weissach wants $250 for each which I think is too much.

I agree that Weissach "list" prices are high, similar to most dealers. They offfer a good PCA member discount, however, usually anywhere from 15% to 50% depending on the mark-up. Since I joined the PCA, I have found that their "discounted" prices are roughly comparable to Paragon after you factor in shipping and exchange. Hard to beat having them the next day in most cases; ordering from Paragon or 944Online involves both shipping and getting it across the border. Weissach is also a major sponsor of local PCA events.

Thumbs up Jump ship

Get thee to Scan Automotive in North Van. Andy knows these cars and ya, he will charge you more for parts than what you can get them for yourself but nothing like Weissach does. No harm in asking.

*no affiliation what so ever with Scan - just a happy customer.
