Default Rebuilt my Torque tube.

As the title says. Wasn't that bad once I got it out. replaced all the bearings and had some delrin sleeves made by a measurment on clarks garage. Used the tech article there and others for reference. One thing though, Mine had the punch riveted carriers in it. I do not see how you could re rivet them, I tack welded them with a mig. Car is quieter and I had a high frequency vibration at 3500-4000 rpms that is gone now. All the bearing were noisy except one.

I do not know why they used sheilded bearings instead of sealed ones but I put sealed ones back.

I rebuilt mine like a month or two ago and had the rivited carriers also. I used pop rivets but i filed the sides a little to get them to fit. I also found a source for the 6006ZZ bearings in C4 clearance came out to 22.50 a bearing

Just wondering...how many miles were on your car when you started to hear the noises?

I got the bearings they are consolidated bearings and were 22.50 a piece. The number for the bearing place i got them is (716)885-9000 the place is ACME bearing it came to 106.49 for me. Make sure to ask for 6006ZZ C4 bearings, I spent a long time looking and calling for the C4 and this was one of the few places that could get them (others could but were expensive)

I got mine from Bearings and drives here in Marietta Ga. $14 and change per. Met the spec except I got sealed units. I did not take any Pictures I too used the write up on clarks Garage.

I did not really hear any noises I had the trans Out to replace a Syncronizer and spun the shaft and heard all kinds of noises. But after putting it back noticed the car was quieter. Mine has 170k on it.

I know I need to search and research this on my own but just out of curiosity...quickly...what is the difference in the C4 bearings and regular and are those sealed? I'm assuming the sealed bearings would last a lot longer and run a lot cleaner? Thanks guys...mine is quiet but I figure when I have the trans out at some point I might as well do this while I'm in there.

Cheers, Josh

The Original bearings are Shielded not sealed. They can sling the grease out and let some dirt in. That being said mine were in there 170k so It doesn't make that much difference. On thing to mention though. I bought mine before I took the old ones out.

The assembly looks like a belt Idler and has a number on it. If you take that number to a bearing place you might be able to get the whole thing and just swap the rubber sleeve to the new units. Could save a lot of work.

C4 internal clearance is a looser fit that a normal clearance bearing. They use a looser fit since the driveshaft spins at high speeds it creates heat and the bearings need to expand and contract with heat
