Funny, you can see most post above, and I think on Pelican I have very similar pictures to yours of my repair. Funnier yet, is that I now am on a different 944 (a 1986 951) and every 6 months it would quit very similar to mine and your situations. I gave it to our soldering whizz here at work who went over most of the board. I didn't actually see cracks in the joints like you did and like I did on my old one but was hoping it was just not very visible.
After the "rework", the car now wouldn't run at all. Ended up getting a $380 used DME on ebay and it runs fine.... Wish I had an idea of how to save my old one and recoup my costs. =( I bet its something in the same circuit, maybe a component failed (or was burnt out)...
