Default What tires?

I have D90's on my S. The fronts are 16x7, the rears are 16x9. I currently have 225's on the front and 245's on the rear. I would like to put someting wider on the rear, but it's difficult to find something wider than a 245 for a 16" wheel. This is a daily driver and DE/HPDE car.

I was having the same thought last night -- with 9" wide rims in the rear, you can stuff more rubber back there, but they're just not being made for 16" rims anymore.

One option I'm considering is mounting 265/45/16 instead of 245/45/16 -- which increases the diameter by 0.71inches (2.9% increase). But it's only 0.53inches larger diameter than the 225/50/16 tires up front. Kumho Victoracers come in 265/45/16. If you want to push it, Hoosiers come in 275/45/16.

But I'm not sure how wider diameter tires will mess up handling -- does anyone know?

Are you overpowering the rear wheels with 245's back there? What sort of tires are you running? The 225 / 245 staggered set up is a balanced one, going to 225 / 265 is going to start to bring the push monster out of your car. If anything I would stick with the 245s on the rear and find matching wheels to run 245s on the front. This will allow you to rotate tires and I feel give the car a slightly better turn in.

If you did go with a 265, I'd find one in a smaller sidewall. .71 inches may be the difference between rubbing and not rubbing

The rears are 245/45 so I guess I'd need a 235/40 or 265/35.
The 7" front won't go much wider than a 225.
It just doesn't seem right to mount a narrower tire on the rears than what it really could have.

I don't think anyone manufactures a wider tire with shorter sidewall than 245/45/16 -- I'd love tobe proven wrong, however.....

Well given our tire diameters 245 is as wide as you can go with a 16" wheel. Go with 17's or 18's and things change. I am not a fan of larger overall diameters either. You lose responsiveness due to side wall height and lose power due the gearing impact.

It is an easy (and usually legal) way to change gearing for different tracks, though. It was an old Firehawk trick, try 245/45x16 and then 255/50x16 and see which yielded lower lap times on a given circuit. I've used 265/45x16 V710's (and V700's) in the same way. (See http://members.rennlist.com/944sandm...tingpoints.htm if you want the gory details.)
