what does a bad water pump sound like?
my car just came out of storage... its making a sound almost like what the power steering pump makes when theres air in the system... except i dont have power steering. it gets higher with the rpm so its deffenitly engine related....
just kind of a waaaaaaaaaa sound
i think i have been driving the last 20k miles with my timing belt too tight because it STILL whines like a friggin supercharger.
what shoudl i expect form a bad waterpump? obviously its going to keep mumping coolant until it absolutely stops right? which will also probly make my timing belt get real real hot until it breaks im guessing.

There is a hole on the side of your water pump called a weep hole. When the pump goes bad it will start pushing some coolant out of the hole when the car is on. If there is coolant coming out of the hole, your pump is bad.
Hope this helps.

If the impeller inside the H2O pump spins off its rod, it makes no noise, and the weep hole stays dry, and there's no leaking of coolant anywhere.
How do I know this? Happened to me a few years back - at Watkins Glen, 4 hours away from home. I did make it home, and only over-heated the car once. (It was a cool October night) Believe it or not, the coolant circulates on its own even without an H2O pump. (Something called thermo-circulaton ??). However, this circulation is not enough to keep the motor cool.
If you think your H2O pump is leaking, you can pressure test the system - if the pressure holds, you're not leaking!
Also: how's the temp guage in the car? Higher than normal?

alright, the temp isnt bad... just slightly above being right in the middle. but i think its a little high because i put the needle on wrong when i took the gauges apart.
so if it turns out to not be the water pump what else should i be checking out... I havent exactly tried to get in there with a stethescope or anything but its coming from the front of the engine somewhere from what i could tell by ear. i know its not the power steering pump because i dont have one... and its not the steering rack because it happens when im sitting still...
does the idle control make any kind of noise? its all vacuum controlled isnt it? my idle is off a little... usualy sits around 1400 to 1500

the water pump is new too, it was replaced about 15k miles ago. not BRAND new but newish... but i've been running my belts tight the whole time...
also, its probly not related but if i drive my car (even just a quick trip aroudn the block) my skin and my clothes will smell like gas/exhaust/oil type of smell. its really anoying. I think it might have something to do with the tail lights not having any sealer on them and me always having ym windws open... so the taillights are actually kind of sucking my exhaust right into the car.

Thats something my wife would say.
Gas smells, tail light seals........probably not related? You need some professional help.
I had an aquaintance some years back, who's solution to new and aquired noises in his car, was to just add another speaker to the stereo system. Last I heard, that particular car had over a dozen speakers in it. GREAT sound system............I suppose.

well i dont mean to put myself on a pedistal or anything... but i am far from new to these engines. I've done complete overhauls, complete builds... tranny jobs... ive always done my belts on my own and tensioned them by feel.
i swear i have heard of the problem with the exhaust smell coming from the tail lights not being sealed before... but maybe that is just a bunch of stories...
hopefully i figure out what the sound is soon... like before it blows
I'll bust out the video camera and let you guys take a listen.

You will get exhaust fumes in the car if the hatch pins aren't lined up just right, or if the seal is dead. I would think it is coming from the hatch long before the tail lights.
I had this problem.. it really only happened when the windows were down, if they were up and the a/c was running i didn't get the free high on the road home from work

Squeaking / squealing noise heard at idle for last 1 week, not affected by turning on headlights - so maybe NOT alternator belt loose, I suspect. How to distinguish between water pump, cambelt idlers, or other belts? Advice appreciated urgently. Thanks, DHC4tjt (87 n/a 944S)
