Im looking for a car to drive around in rush hour traffic and bad weather. I found a 96 cherokee and was wondering if anyone has had any experiences with them. As far as reliability and the longevity of them how are they?

Fuel economy is worse than bad, and thats with a six. If its an eight you will go broke. Reliability is a matter of luck.

I have a 2000 Grand cherokee laredo with the 4.7 V8. Mileage is about 16-18 in town, though the older jeeps with the 5.7 V8 may suck down more. Knock on wood, but we drove it off the new car lot 78k miles ago, and it has never been back for anything. I just did the brakes on it, and tires awhile back, but that has been it other than the general maintenance items. Other than that it has not needed anything. I have heard that the waterpumps tend to go, as well as the diffs, but have not had the pleasure of experiencing that yet.

The 4.0 inline sixes are bulletproof.

It has the 4.0L V6 and a 1 owner car. Not really to worried about gas mileage if it gets 18 highway thats good enough.

I have a 98 cherokee with the inline 6, 4.0 and has been the most reliable car yet.
Bad on gas but just keeps going. Never put a penny into it other than fluids and still drive it everyday @ 147,000 later.
But I drive 70 miles a day and the gas is killing me.

Is it a standard Cherokee Sport or Country (the smaller one) or a grand cherokee? I don't think I would buy a grand cherokee with the 4.0 in it, I am guessing it would be a dog. The 4.0 on the other hand is about perfect for the smaller cherokee and the wrangler.

Its the country. How bad would the gas mileage be?

I've had 2 Cherokees and 2 Grands. The regular cheokee is great. They will just about run foerever. The srtaight 6, 4.0L is bullet proof. Change the oil regularly and just drive it. The 4x4 will go about anywhere you want to go.

Thanks for the input everybody. I was just a little concerned since it already had 100,000 miles on it. But you guys have reassured me. Thanks again

I know rural carriers that have over 300k on theirs. And they run the hell out of 'em.

I had an XJ 4.0, it was great. I'm not sure what sort of MPG you are expecting, but a 4wd making up near 200HP is not going to get very good mileage. I thought the 4.0 did pretty well, 17-19 combined for mine but it was an earlier one with the French FI. A 96 should do a bit better.

My Porsche is for getting to work. My Jeep is what I am about! I love Jeeps. I currently only have my 95 YJ Wrangler w/2.5l. Great rig and built pretty descent. Our previous Jeep was a 95 Jeep Cherokee with the 4.0l. It got about 18mpg, ran forever and was quite peppy. You can't go wrong with a Cherokee, Grand Cherokees have alot more options and alot more problems. Stick with the wranglers and Cherokees.

Just finished building my fenders in this pic
