In the rear hatch area what is (and where is) the trigger for the interior lights? I didn't see any pin type connectors like on the doors.

On late-model cars it uses the hatch-strut connectors to sense if the hatch is open or not.

Like he said. There's an electrical connection on the passenger side gas strut that does the sensing. The wire likes to get worn down over time and will short out. Luckily its a pretty easy fix since all you have to do is make sure the wiring doesn't double back on itself or ground out.

Yep that wire was broken off at the plug on the lower end of the passenger side. There is some sort of cup at the bottom of the strut that it plugs into.

So what are the plugs for on the drivers side strut? The drivers side doesn't have that cup type thing at the bottom. But there is a wire plugged in top and bottom.

SoCal Driver

Drivers side is for the defroster grid. Both it and the light ground out through the ball and socket on the passenger side strut.
