Hmmm. I had heard that they were glued in and that was a pain. I will begin my planning then. I think that removing and adding the carpet mod could be very reversible then..if I wanted to go back to stock. Thanks Fellas

Well the bottom is glued in but all you have to do is slip your hand between the seat padding and metal and it separates very easily. Some of the adhesive and padding will remain but Xlylene, a stiff brush, a BIG *** FAN takes care of any remaining residue.

Rear seats are easy to get out, just make sure you take out the seat belt latches, instead of trying to rip it out!!

Default Just an update with Pics

Thought I would toss a few pics out there. I'm about 3/4 finished on this. It took much longer than expected trying to fit everything up to those strange curves. I have been able to install it without drilling a single hole using only 4 existing tapped holes. All I have left is slap the carpet on and mount the amps. Any way i thought I would do an update as I stated 3 weeks ago!

Upper/lower seat stripped of all upholstery before using xylene to remove the old glue

Layout for face piece

Test mounting amps with added bottom section to seat back

Brushed aluminum panels for cooling

Double foil faced insulation under all carpet and bracket mounted to seat belt holes

Upper tray for camera

Gluing Nuprene on the facing under carpet and ever present beer

Side mounts using existing trim holes

Ready for carpet

I've made patterns for everything so far so anyone with a tommyhawk, a sharp clam, and the ability to climb into small caves can do the same thing.

Ive been thinking of doing this, anyone done it with fiberglass? Seems like it would be pretty easy to do and light.

Looks very nice, and I like the vents for the amps. Would love to get a copy of those patterns.

Is it absolutely necessary to delete the rear seats? Could you make something similar without removing them? Just in case you wanted to take it out later to sell or if you change your mind.

Believe it or not I think fiberglass would weigh more. You still have to have a wooden frame to glass over. All the wood added to the car weighed less than 5lbs. I thought of making a mold from what I have and still can but I haven't done much FG work. The 1/2" foil faced thermal/sound insulation is fire-retardent and weighs the most. I'm going to do the tunnel, floors and rear deck with the foil stuff and apply the Nuprene on the sheet metal doors, sides, and ceiling areas. The 1/8" Nuprene weighs next to nothing, strtches around curves and is what Boeing uses on it's passeneger jets for sound control. I want a quiet Kuhl car when I roll the windows up.

Just go to Pick N Pull and get a $10 upper section from a junker to strip down. The bottom section is just glued down and could always be put back with the good OE upper from your car. I thought the same thing about reselling but my lower seat had serious water damage already. The rear seats are useless anyway and I got tired of my camera always falling off the seat on runs. The whole thing will lift right out with carpet attached when I'm done next weekend.

I fid them useful as a package shelf. Plus, they make a good test for chicks. You can see which are, uhh, not thin, by gauging how quickly/easily they get in and fit. I've had one girl explicitly prefer the backseat, lol. But I digress. Cool project.
