best write-up for motor mount replacement?
Clarks-garage is the only one I've found except the shop service manual. I've heard of people doing one side at a time to prevent the engine from shifting when both are disconnected at once. I'll be working alone so I won't have the luxury of having some gorilla top side with a pipe to help me align them. Anyone have any fail proof tips for doing this job solo? TIA

Thought I had an old instruction set from Don Istook back from the old Porshe list days, but cannot find it. I say go with Clarks Garage. It is pretty good. Also, I will never disconnect both mounts at the same time again! The job really is not that difficult. You should finish it in an afternoon. The one time I disconnected both sides at once is the time I spent many days trying to line it back up again.

I watched a motor mount install on a '86 951 June 10th. They did one side at a time, seemed to work well. Then again, they had a engine hoist and a lift for the car, so it was easier. Still took 3 guys roughly 6-7 hours for both. They went by clarks garage for the install. Hope it goes well!

We just did this 2 weekends ago. Took us 4 hrs due to the fact that it was original mounts, and 2 bolts (one from each mount) would not budge no matter what method we did. We ended up cutting the bolts to remove the it. It was fairly easy once we removed the bolts. One advise is make sure not to remove both cross member mount bolts at the same time. Loosen both but do not remove one of them. This is where aligning them to install may cause a problem.

Steve,
I usually put a floor jack under the engine, with a 2x10. I loosen all of the motor mount bolts and jack the engine up about 2.5 inches. I then take out the cross member bolts out one at a time, and rethread them in about 2 turns. I then pull the cross member down. I can usually have enough room to pull the mounts out and put new ones in.

I just did the motor mounts on my mom's car. I went by Clarks-Garage and I got it done in about 12 hours. I loosened all 4 crossmember bolts, and both motor mount nuts, then I did one side at a time. Floor jack with a square of plywood.
Tip: I cut 4.5mm off of the studs on the new mounts. The mounts would NOT have enough clearance to fit into place otherwise. Cutting off 4.5mm still leaves about 2mm of excess stud, once you put the nut on.
Tip 2: On the right side, it was necessary to completely remove the 2 right crossmember bolts and actually pry it downwards to create more clearance. Maybe I was going about it the wrong way.
