Just bought my '83 944 today actually, I'm 19. First post on the boards as well. So yeah, I drive my brothers 944 alot so thats why I bought one for myself. Turns out we got my dad hooked on them as well so he bought a turbo. Go figure.

When you get it make sure you stay away from the Tail of the dragon until you know the car real well. It will be tempting and I've even thought of driving down there just to go through it. Probably a really really bad Idea to go there anyways.
You've got enough good roads out there anyways.

The tail of the dragon is one awesome place. I have been up there 3 times with my 951 and love it. BTW, you just missed out on probably the nicest N/A I have ever seen here in Charlotte. Joe's 944 or fezz to you guys just sold his for 4k. Man, I wish I could have bought that car.

Well sonny (old codger voice), back in my day a typical first car could be some V-8 powered, poor handling, poor braking creation of the sixties. I have to believe that a teenager today would be far safer in a 944....

I got my first 944 NA when I was 16. I had been around 944's since I was a baby, my Dad had one when they were brand new. I had it for a couple of months and drove a 951 that someone local had for sale and I caught the turbo bug and instantly put my NA up for sale. It sold after having it for 8 months or so, and I bought a 951 when I was still 16. I had that car for 2 years or so, sold it to someone, the oil pan gasket started leaking about two weeks after they got it so I traded them straight up for a E36 BMW I had gotten for cheap. I drove the 951 for about 4 or 5 months and then sold it to another another rennlister in Kansas City who turned around and sold it to Porschedoc here on rennlist. I was burned out on fixing 944's and drove another BMW for the last 2 1/2 years which I sold last fall and bought another 951 that I had been wanting since I laid eyes on it 3 years ago or so. I was 20 then and 21 now, so I am on number 3 at the moment.

Other side of the tracks.
I got mine at 44 (two months ago). It's a car I wanted when they came out but I was busy getting married, buying and house and starting a family.
At this point, I'm glad I waited. I can easily afford to repair the car the proper way. If it needs something, it gets it immediately and it gets new parts. I'm doing the repairs myself but if it has to go to a mechanic it will. Once this car is finished I'll keep it and probably step up to some model of the 911. Right now I'm thinking 993 but that could change over time.

I started looking when I was 17 and finally got my turbo when I was 20. Great cars, just be ready with the check book if anything goes wrong, but if you do a lot of the work yourself, then it shouldn't be so bad. Same here tho, never looked back! Well...only to see my dad fall behind me in his 84 Carrera at track events...

I don't have a 944, but was offered one at 18. My brother (FRPorscheman) keeps trying to get me into them, but I would only get a 951 (black on black). My current car is N/A, and I want to try out a very decent turbo car.
Don't get me wrong though, starting out with an N/A is the way to start, or else you might fall off the bandwagon sooner (if ever :-))
