Maybe it’s just me, but what the heck is a friction coated rod bearing? As far as I know all rod and main bearing have a Teflon coating. Is this something that is on top of that? If yes, how did they handle the increase in bearing thickness brought on by the additional layer of coating? Besides, rod and main bearing don’t have any friction, the layer of oil between the bearing and the journal eliminates any friction during full oil pressure. The only time they can wear is maybe during start up.

You cannot eliminate friction it it's entirety. Teflon is a joke compared to some of the anti friction coatings used in F1 and other high dollar racing.

Go to Calico Coatings website and read about the coating, that is the one commonly used. Almost every bearing that is taken out of a used 944 motor is worn, and it is not only from startup. Especially the rod bearings, the oil barrier can brake down for any number of reasons. The coating is a dry lubricant, meaning it saves bearings a little longer before they are trashed. It is thin and has a negligable effect on clearances. I am fixing the pictures now.
