Question Are there ball bearings inside the engine?

I think not, but correct me if I'm wrong. The main crasnshaft bearing are solid bearings, are they?, so is everything that attaches to the crankshaft. The balance shafts have solid bearings only too. Of course there are ball bearings on the belt rollers. How about the camshaft?

Why do I ask? I found a new noise, and it sound as if somebody was tossing a small stone against a wall. Could it be from a partially worn out ball bearing?

All your main engine components run on solid bearings. I assume it's a rhythmic noise that varies with engine speed? One of the best description of the various knocking noise is:

- dropping bb's on a steel work table = injector noise
- tapping a screw driver on a steel work table = bad lifter
- tapping a small hammer on a steel work table = bad rod bearing

Thanks Skip, your description of noises will be helpful in the future.
But this is a random noise: happens every few minutes or so, without any rhythm.
Could something chiped out inside the engine, e.g. inside the water pump or the oil pump, and be thrown occasionally against the block by the pump rotor?
If this sounds unlikely, can a bad bearing make this sort of noise (tossing a small stone against a wall)?
Thanks.

If you have a bad bearing it would be rhythmic in time with the engine speed.

Does the noise happen when you are driving or at idle or both? How sure are you that its coming from the motor?

If it happens when your driving I would start checking suspension mounts, especially sway bar mounts. Engine problems are usually rhythmic in time with the engine speed.

Any chance it could be a belt slapping against the TB cover?

I think not; the belt tracking looks OK, and I haven't noticed anything unusual while looking at the belt when it happens.
As far as whether the noise comes from the engine, or the drive train, I'm testing it in the garage, off gear. Theoretically it could be somewhere between the trany (or a part of it) and the engine, but the noise appears from the front of the engine. The funnny part is that I noticed it for the first time after removing the balance belt. Now it's with or without the balance belt.
