Question DIY Seat Recover?

Has anyone made their own seat recover kit? I want to replace the upholstery on my front seats (and I'll be pulling the rear before long), but I don't really care for the options that are out there, especially considering the price. I'm thinking that I'll salvage the back and sides from the existing set, and just redo the seatbed and back to make life easier (and because the black vinyl looks pretty decent as it stands).

I'm thinking of trying to fabricate a custom leather piece, but I haven't figured out what color- The black interior is just looking old and boring, so I'll probably lighten it up a bit. I'm also planning on redoing the door panels as well with the same material.

Any suggestions? I didn't see anything on the search, but I somehow doubt I'm the first one to try this...
