Default More wiper issues

Just bought a 1987 944 and inherited a winshield wiper motor issue. The thing doesn't work at all. I know it is getting power due to the fact that the actual motor assembly gets very hot if I switch the wiper lever to any "on" position and cools back down when I switch the wiper lever to the off position. Does this mean that the thing is literally toast? The plastic cover below the winshield has a portion cut away to expose the wires at the top of the wiper motor. I imagine this has something to do with the malfunction. There is an additional smaller cover over the wiper motor housing but it does not protect the wires, just the main part of the bottom of the wiper motor. So is it time for a new wiper motor??? I have read that these things are a bear to replace. If so, any recommendations on new or used?
