Default What happened to Mobil 1 synthetic with the red cap?

I need to change the oil in my 951, so I went shopping for some Mobil 1 synthetic. I have been using the 15W-50 grade (red cap) in the past with great oil pressure even in the summer heat.

I went to at least 4 stores in the Chicago area, and I couldn't find the 15W-50 product!
Wal-Mart
Murray's Auto
Autozone
Mobil 1 gas station

Is the "red cap" product still sold in the US? I only saw 5W-30 and 10-W30 synthetic in the 5-quart containers at Wal-Mart.

It's now the "extended protection" gold cap-still available and a little more expensive.

I noticed that too, is it the same stuff other than the label and the price?

Whats the deal with this. I need to get a case soon also. I thought they were still going to make the regular stuff we have all been using for years but they just added all this new crap? Why go change a good thing? Any body got any info?

From what I've heard, its not quite the same. Some have experienced more foaming than with the original M1. Time to switch to Syntec, eh?

Yeah I was just forced to buy a case of the extended performance crap. It was like 1.50 more each quart. Rediculous.

Eh, I found it to be about the same in price as the red cap stuff. Performance is about the same - ie: no foaming issues for me.

I don't know about foaming with the 'newer extended' stuff but it does have more detergents in it than the old stuff I would buy. What I noticed is I tend to burn a little bit more than the old stuff and after a hot run my idle psi would be 1/2 bar lower but still good. I changed to Valvoline Racing VR-1 20W-50 last time and have been very encouraged with the results so far. It seems to leak and burn less also.

steve- where do you get the valvoline?

i think i'm going to try and get an oil change and maybe a seafoaming in before the run, considering that there's about 300 hours of sun per day.

VR1 is sold at kragen, pep boys, and probably elsewhere too. Just remember, it's mineral based oil.

I'm currently using 20-50 VR1 too.

Check to see if there is a BJ's Wholesale Club near you. The one I go to does have it. Last time I checked the price, it was around $31-32/case (6 qts).

Hope that helps.
