My brother is looking at a car that needs this done - if it looks halfway decent otherwise he will probably buy it. Anyways, I have done a lot of maint. on 944's - but never an oil cooler reseal..........

Get the kit from vertex... inspect the OPRV while doing, possibly get alignment tool, make sure oil cooler is level on reassembly and have at it. Access is the biggest challenge, especially if you have your heat shielding still on.

Tell me about this alignment tool - I have heard of them but never actually seen it or seen it used. If someone has one and is kind enough to give me precise dimensions I can crank one out on the CNC lathe........

Also, I personally don't use it... it's a little touch-feely with the OPRV as your guide and away you go.

I just did this myself yesterday actually. I was able to get the housing off without removing the exhaust manifold, however i also have the cross member off and the entire front suspension. Clarks-Garage has a good procedure on removal. Its 4 mounting bolts plus the regulator valve. You may consider updating to the one piece style valve if you have oil pressure problems.
The heatshield wasnt hard to remove, two 7mm nuts i believe held it on. Just have a decent selection of wobbles to help you reach the top most bolt..i was able to squeeze an extension with built in wobble and wobbled 13mm (or maybe it was 10mm) socket in between the frame rail and housing. A shot with the impact wrench got it off.
Just be prepared for a mess of oil and coolant.
