Default Freeze12 charging questions

I want to put Freeze12 in my '86 951. Do I have to drain the oil out of the system and replace with some sort of compatible Freeze 12 oil. My existing system is an R-12 system. I ahve no history on what lead to the loss of charge. Chances are I have a leak somewhere rather than a slow minute leak over time. Is my best bet to perform a partial charge with the Freeze12 UV stuff and go hunting for a leak, or to pump the system down and see if it holds vacuum for 1, 2 3 days before charging? Is Freeze12 available at Pep Boys in NJ?

Thanks
Mike

Not sure if Pep Boys would have it, but even for Freeze 12, you need a license pffft, the O-zone so what?

Mike,
I am not an expert but I believe Freeze 12 to be compatible with R12. If that is the case then you should be OK to charge with Freeze 12 and not change the oil. If the system has no charge at all then I would put in a new receiver/dryer along with new O-rings. I would also change the O-rings on the compressor and condensor. The O-rings at the expansion valve are a pain to get to so I would not change them unless absolutely necessary. After changing the 6 O-rings I would pull a vacuum and see if it holds, how long is up to you. If the vacuum holds then I would put in the Freeze 12. If you change the receiver/dryer then you probably need to add an oz of oil to the system. You can get freeze 12 on ebay, it takes a special hose so get one of those also.

Just remember though if you use Freeze 12 you may find it very difficult to have a commercial shop evacuate it in the future. It contaminates other refrigerants in their recovery machine unless thay have one dedicated to Freeze 12. The mineral oil for R-12 is completely compatible between the 2 products. I just redid my 86 with R-12 Saturday and it took 14oz to get 49 deg F. at the vent on an 88 deg day. The 83 must have a weak compressor, it won't even get close to spec for the high pressure side; 140 psi was all I could get and the low side would drift past 50 psi as the compressor ran
