I agree, with the oil co.'s propaganda theory too.

This has been discussed last year. Here is a link to the tread. https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...&highlight=oil

Agreed.

People who change their oil every 3k are just pure suckers!

I shoot for somewhere around 5k on all my vehicles unless it's a new one needing it's first service.

OUCH. I hope that includes vaseline for the rear end as well!

Agreed. BITOG is the best oil resource out there.

About 6 months ago a PCNA rep told me directly that 25,000 km is the recommended interval for new Porsches based on a full synthetic and normal driving conditions. They did not put a time limit on it, and indicated that oil run over several years would not be a problem.

I personally think that is insane, but it is becoming the norm for many German cars. It does presume that you are using a full synthetic.

If the oil is not contraminated by water or fuel or coolant, there is no reason why a modern synth could not hold up that long, especially when Porsche engines tend to consume some oil so you may be topping up with oil replenishing the additives and TBN.

But that does not mean i trust it, especially on an older car. After a few years of trying various things I am down to changing using synthetic 0w40 about 5000 miles or 1 year which works out about the same on my 951. So I change the oil before winter storage. Fresh filter every time. I know is overkill and that my oil could run twice that interval but it's cheap insurance and peace of mind.

I do question how well it would do running three times that long.

3000 miles on Dino oil would also be overkill for most cars but if I was running a turbo on Dino I would change it frequently or switch to synth.

My friend (work with him too, hes a mechanic and machinst) tells me change FILTER every 3K and oil every 7K

I wouldn't normally listen to this advice, but he was crew chief on a very successful pro team racing 911 RSRs in the late 70s and is the man who builds the Forumla car my boss races. He is turning 1:53 to 1:56s at Watkins Glen with no failures of any sort. since then thats what I do
