Default Head Unit Recommendations

A quick search of the archives didnt turn up anything...

It looks like my 10 year old Alpine headunit is toasted...so, the search for a replacement begins.

I dont want something that will look out of place in a 17 year old car...but I dont want 1980's tech either. So that means no blingin displays, but no tape decks either. I like the look of the factory unit in my mom's boxster, so I am looking for something in that ballpark.

As far as sound quality, I am no audiophile...so that isn't a large concern. Of course it has to sound decent but I am not looking for top notch sound quality.

So, what do you guys suggest?

TIA,
Adrial

I've been looking for a stereo for my 968 since I bought it in December '05. I also want something that matches the look of the console and blends in, while not being obsolete.

I recommend a Porsche deck from a newer car (like a boxster), or a Nakamichi. They almost always have very simple faces, and orange (amber) lit displays. I F'ing hate bright blue displays.

Find a Harmon Kardon Traffic Pro on EBAY. Looks like an older unit, plays cds can be made to work with an Ipod. This unit also has navigation that will work with 85.5 and later cars. You can buy them for around $200-300. Great units.

I like alpine, nakamichi, and eclipse (well the pre '05 eclipse...) units for fairly understated headunits that still perform very well

I got an Alpine 9856. It doesn't look like a disco ball and performs well and lists for around $200. Like all head units it doesn't have adequate power to really play loudly. If you listen at moderate levels it will be fine. If not, you'll want to consider an amp for additional power (as with any head unit).

Good luck.

Try Blaupunkt, they usually have some nice low key headunits. I myself have a Blaupunkt Casablanca mp54 in my 951.

I've got a Becker Cdr 220, it says porsche on the front panel, I got it from
http://swstereo.com/, you have to get a replacement front, as the angle of our installation means it cant be read otherwise.
Not cheap but looks factory, very similar to that Harmon Kardon, but it says'Porsche'

thanks for the suggestions

I like the harmon kardon...maybe a little pricey, last one sold on ebay for $350...
I assume it needs an external GPS receiver for the nav to work?

The HK Traffic pro is made by Becker, looks just like the becker CDR220 in my Boxster.
The CDR 220 is less than impressive, looks good in a Porsche but way better head units available for far less.

It has the gps unit built in, comes with a gps antenna. It is easy to operate and very accurate. A lady (or man, your choice) with an American accent or English accent tells you where to turn, which lane you need to be in etc. I like the lady with the English accent. The display shows which HWY you are on and how far to your destination. You can be guided to restaurants, places of interest and all the typical navigation things. The pre-amp side is very clean, with a high quality amp the sound is fantastic. I personally think it is a perfect unit for a 944 if you want an older looking unit with newer features. I have a couple of friends that have them in 911's and really like them. I am going to keep an eye on Ebay for a good buy.
