Default Replacing catalytic converter

OK, well it looks like I need to replace the cat on my '86 951; I really don't want to pay some ridiculous amount for an OEM one, so I'm planning on just using a universal one like a magnaflow or something.

My question is, which aftermarket cats will fit? What size/shape should I be looking for and what inlet/outlet diameter?

thanks

If I had the $$$, I'd do that, but at this point I really just need to replace just the cat; and one that can weld up to the exhaust with the wastegate tie in pipe in place

Do you have emissions testing down there?

If I didn't do you think I'd be asking

Not trying to be an ***, but yeah I do have to do an emissions test - what really sucks is that if I had originally signed all the papers to register the car in Waco where I go to shcool I wouldn't have the have to emissions test, but I've already signed the paperwork and put my address down (in Fort Worth, where i am for the summer) etc but have to get inspected before I register...so basically what I'm trying to say is damnit

OK, well I've talked to a few exhaust shops around here and they all seem to want to sell me some > $400 cat + a bit more than $200 to install. $600-$700 for just a cat is &$%#*^@ ridiculous, and that lindsey system is looking a bit more appealing, but before I go spending all that money on a new exhaust, I want to look into the possibility of buying a magnaflow or random tech cat online and having it welded into place, so here are my questions:

What parts of the exhaust are double walled?
What size is the pipe that connects to the factory cat? (ie what inlet/outlet diameter do I need?)

I am very interested to see what you come up with. I too need to do some emissions testing and I don't currently have a cat in place. $600 is definitely ridiculous.

at this point I'm seriously looking into have a porsche race shop around here fab me up a 3" exhaust with a magnaflow cat (magnaflow # 53009) and muffler (magnaflow #11219); depending on the price quote I get from them I'll probably go that route or order one from Lindsey racing - I don't really want to do either of these due to the cost and my current funds, but at the same time, if its gonna cost the same to replace the cat, I'll go with the full exhaust in a heartbeat - besides, I guess I couldn't really complain too much about having a great sounding 3" on my car

However, I'm still gonna call around/visit a few places to see if they'll just weld a cat up if I bring one into them; either way, I'll keep everyone posted

There are different kinds of thieves, but at least you have the choice of saying no.

Here is a picture of my solution.

A small general purpose cat usually works which can be had here for about $65 or on eBay for a little less.

Newer cats have less catalyst dispersed and usually require some vigorous exercise before doing an emission test. With a little training you can easily smell, when they are active and therefore ready for test.

Laust, those are similar to the cats I've been looking at online - though I was planning on a round magnaflow rather than oval; do the oval cats from magnaflow and the like fit better under the car?

PS any of those vacuum manifolds left for an '86 turbo?

Buy a universal cat and weld it in. Save up for a lindsey or SFR exhaust later. That's just my $0.02

I agree, you can have a catco high flow cat for well under $100 and then have someone fab it up. Also the exhaust I believe is 2.5" factory. Good luck.

yeah, thats what I've been trying to tell the guys at the exhaust shops, but of course they know more than everyone here about how to put a cat on

I just had this done today. My 86 failed emissions and was actually reading higher levels after the cat then before it. Yikes.

So I had a catco high flow welded in. Total cost, $375. Seemed about the right price.
