You might be able to beat on it with a rubber mallet and then try the gear type puller again. In my experience the gear style puller ussally works great. Best of luck.

I am suprised a pickle fork is not working... give it a solid whack with a sledge hammer. I tried gear pullers when i did it the first time with my car and never had sucsess. a solid shot with a sledge hammer (and my father holding the pickle fork steady knocked the tie rod right off. Grease both sides of the fork so you can atleast try to save the boot.
I did this again on another 944 two days ago, tried gear puller.. got close to getting it off but still not enough. Hit it with the pickle fork again and popped right off.

pickle fork and a hammer did no good, but did destroy the boot.
pitman arm puller i bought had too large of an opening. gear pullers were worthless.
heat for 2 minutes and 1 hit with a hammer knocked it out.

You have tried taking the nut off the top, turning upside down on it (full thread engagement) and beating directly down on that nut I take it. I too am surprised that a properly sized pickle fork did not get it apart. Heat on that knuckle would be something I'd not want to do myself as I'd be somewhat afraid of getting carried away with the heating, and possibly ruining the temper of the knuckle. I'm not sure that is a real concern, butt, I would avoid it, if possible.
A properly sized tie rod/pitman arm puller, loaded up on the screw, and a good whack with a hammer on the end of that screw has always worked for me. Even with some awfully stuck ones. Pickle forks will almost always destroy the boots. Good luck.

i tried beating on the locking nut, to no avail. a proper sized pitman arm puller would have probably worked as well, but after 3 trips to the parts store i was ready for a quick shot of the heat.

Here's the tool:

Doesn't tear boots and works every time. OK, sometimes I need to tap the joint with a hammer but have never been denied.
