new distributor cap - moves?!
I just changed the distributor cap on my 83. Once I got it on, I find out it rotates back and forth? is this normal? Id say its not. Its enought to change timing at least 2 or 3 degress Id think. Will a new gasket fix this? thanks in advance!

Dare Devil is right here. When I put my new one on my 84 the first time it moved as well. Had to remove it and try again. When it is on it is SNUG. Mine was tough even with the old gasket.
Good luck..
BTW did you bend a screw driver? It seems odd but it makes it a LOT easier to get the bottom screw to go.

I tried it twice...Ill look at it again though. I used a stubby for the bottom screw...man, what a PITA. Would it really have been that hard for Porsche to just use bolts like everyone else? =)

ALso, what brand cap is it? PLease don't tell me you went to a store in the CSK chain and bought a Borg Warner. I work for CSK, and I tell ya, I definately don't stand behind 1/2 of our products, I've used a few Borg warner caps on several of my cars, NONE would fit snug, I went to, sadly enough, an Autozone and ordered Bosch, problem solved.

It should be pretty darn tight -- not able to rotate by hand. I removed the little vapor barrier inside, so I can just remove the top timing cover it mounts to. Haven't dealt with those spring clips in years.
As for timing, when the coil produces its spark, it will jump directly to the plug wire when it fires -- and keep in mind the head of the rotor stays in contact for something like 10 degrees of crank rotation -- so the exact cap position should not affect timing unless its way way off.

Try this procedure from Clarks Garage

Go to the Garage shop manual under Distributor and there is an excellent write-up. Probably one of the screws holding the cap is not fully engaged. This can be tricky and even though I've done it many times it still can be puzzling.

im 100% postive the two latches were engaged. The old gasket was preformed to the last cap, and it looks pretty old. Ill try a new gasket and see what happens. This is a bosch cap from pelican
