Yeah, iniquiring minds want to know! (whether it's worth going to sheriff auctions, that is)

Unlikely that a running car would be just abandoned on the side of the road, then not claimed by the PO. Most likely, someone stole the car and kept it a while, the insurance co paid off the PO, and then the thief abandoned it (DME?).

Sheriff prolly picked it up, towed it, checked and found that it was stolen and paid off by the insurance, and since the insurance co didn't want to bother claiming the car and pick it up, it went to auction.

Wow, can I draw a conclusion, or what?

Anyway, congrats on a nice, new car. Oh, and do a search on Turby so you know what that was all about.

I once lost a car to the impound yard and then the local gov't auction.

I was young and dumb and had traded a trashed Dodge Colt for a thrashed '77 Olds Delta 88 Coupe with a 350 rocket - and wooden bumpers, no turn signals, no locks, lots of rust and odd smells, etc. The gas gauge was DOA, and eventually I ran out of gas on a long section of road with nowhere to hide. So I left it on the shoulder and had to hitch a ride to school (exam day!) then later borrow a pickup and a towstrap. By that time the county had snapped it up - and then I proceeded to learn a valuable lesson on The Importance of Getting The Damn Title In Your Name, You Young Dumbass. I lost so many good cassette tapes... and a two-week old $330 complete headers-to-tips exhaust system. Doh!

I'm guessing that this 944 may have had a similar fate, except the impounding tow-truck driver didn't waste any time with a jimmy, he just smashed the window in.
