why bother converting to R134, R12 is colder anyways.

I had to drain my system when I took the AC compressor out to be fixed. Now I need to fill it up again. Where is the cheapest place to get some r12?....mexico?

I will be fixing and rechaging my A/C system this week, with R12 all for the cost of 60 BUX for 4.2ilbs of R12 and free labour. It will be the first time in almost 2 years that my A/C system works. Out in Seattle I didn't really need the A/C but since i will be in Kentucky you better believe I will have A/C on.

I can't afford new compressors and evaporators for the conversion to r-134a, and I refuse to use r-12, so any car of mine with an r-12 system effectively has no working AC. This is why I love my 968 and its r-134a!

I'm not a hippie, I just avoid r-12 to do my part to keep atmospheric temps cool so my engine can breathe denser air.

i know r-12 is harmful to the ozone, but in what way? when you have the a/c on is it releasing chemicals into the air? or is it when you are flushing and charging the a/c system that the chemicals can get into the air?

I've been using r134a without any conversion.
[EDIT]: except for the fittings and a shorter AC belt.[/EDIT]
I rebuilt the compressor myself, had the system vacuumed out, and filled it with r134a. It probably isn't as cold as r12, but it makes a difference on a hot day.

Personally i think sitting in trafic is even worse on a hot day with the roof off. The sun really beats down on you.

I used my a/c for the first time in over a year today and was suprised it still worked. The previous owner said it didnt work, i refilled it with R-134A (it was converted) last March...and never used the system last summer. I turned it on briefly today and was amazed it still was blowing cold. Power does feel down when its on though...but frankly i could careless if i am in stop and go traffic, and at highway speed i hardly even notice it.

Mavfan, intentionally / or accidentally venting R-12 into the atmosphere is what kills the ozone.

Stan, I need the details on your AC work! I'm moving to the socal area and I'm going to need AC, and like I said money is my obstacle.

So all you did was remove and rebuild your compressor, reinstall it, have the system vacuumed out, put on new fittings, and put in the new oil and r-134a? That's a job pretty much anyone can do, it sounds like.

I found a (the?) problem: the passenger side fan doesn't engage at all. The fan itself is OK, so it's most likely some wiring issues, or a relay.
