Default transmission problems

I have a problem with my trans in my 944 N/A, The guy I bought the car from said he just rebuilt the trans, but when I put the car in Reverse I have to really step on the gas to get the car to move upon letting off of the gas the car immeditaly stops, the same is true for low gear the car moves but gets to a point that it wont pick up any more speed maybe 15 MPH max. my thoughts are that the low/reverse bands are to tight. Is there any way to adjust this with out have to tear the trans all apart?
