Default Sunroof Problems

I just bought my first Porsche, a 1988 944 in very good condition. The only relatively major problem I have is with the sunroof. In key postition 1 I get no movemnt out of my sunroof motor. In key position 2 I get movement out of the motor in the rear but nothing out of my gears. I took the assemblies apart and found that the gears will probably need replacing as they are in less than perfect condition. The thing that worries me is that when the motor in the rear clicks on it seems to have a lot of movement itself, both laterally and front to back. My first thought while observing this was that this amount of motor movement couldn't be right. Also for all the motor's whirring the white plastic gears inside the interior assemblies seemed to move very little, maybe only a quarter turn. I think that pretty much sums up the problem. I had to take apart the gear assemblies and physically repostion the lifter arms to lock the sunroof in place but I figured since I would probable end up replacing the entire unit anyways that this wouldn't be a big deal. Any ideas or suggestions that anyone has are more than welcome!

(p.s. I already tried the search and couldn't find anything applicable to my problem)

Thanks

Cole

I've looked in the owner's manual and I've found nothing adressing my problem. I've yet to get my hands on a repair manual locally, I fear that I will have to order it online!

No, I think he means ditch the motors and go to a manually operated sunroof.

DOH! Had a brain fart! I'll try it and see if it will actually move the gears but I'd much rather have the electrically operated sunroof when push comes to shove.

Thanks for the links. Does anybody know if the sunroof motor should move that much? It moves a lot (inches!) both side to side and back to front.

If your saying that the motor physicaly moves!!! No that`s not normal at all. I mean it's attached to a backplate and well screwed in place, so it should not move at all. The motor turns the clutch which move the cable, so no motor movement you should see.

Can you wiggle it with your hand?

I can wiggle it with my hand, but I sort of suspected that the motor was not secured properly. I didn't want to start wrenching on stuff until I found out if that amount of movement was normal or not. I'm going to try to secure it better today and see if that makes a difference.

Can you change it over from power to manual? Don't recall seeing any posts on that, but I might be interested in doing that to mine. Mine is in need of the little blue pill, since when I press the switch I can't get it to pop up as high as it use to.

How much did the power to manual kit cost? If I can't get this friggin' thing to work that's definately a viable option...

Little blue pill--HA! I need cialis for mine, then it will work anytime for up to 36 hours!

Mine will release but it will not lock. When I push the button in position 1 it releases the roof and I can push up on it but does not raise the roof. When I push the down switch nothing happens. Tried doing it manually and it will not budge. What actually locks the roof in place as I see no clamps or anything extending from the car?

The arms actually lock it in place. With key in position 1, pushing down on the switch will retract the arms to allow you to remove the roof.

Key in position 2, pressing up or down will do just that, extract the arms to lift the roof or retract them to lower. In this key position, pushing down on the console switch will lower the roof only to the closed position, it will not go to the full retracted position on available with key in position 1.

Hope I was clear, not sure I was.

I will check it out tonight although it did not appear to do anything in position 2. Thanks for the advice, I hope it works.
