Default Question regarding water pumps and cooling

Dear list...I am putting my 1986 944 together after it has been apart a bit. I replaced the water pump with a new one. I am also replacing all the hoses.
My water pump has a added plastic hose connection off to one side. Indeed the old one did as well. However, I cannot figure what hose goes to it???
Can I get advise. I am also having a problem getting the water to circulate till it comes out of the breather plug. I hooked up hoses and dead headed the afore mentioned barb (Im guessing its for turbo cooling?). I filled it with coolant, opened the interior heater and ran a bit. It warmed up but it seemed like there was no water at the upper end. Hmmmm.
Any advise is greatly appreachiated. Qik944
