Default All inclusive cost to repair/replace my CV joints?

I broke one. Does this entail more repair than just replacing one? How much should I pay for repair? im doing it myself I just want to know everything I need to do the job.
Thanks

It will depend on how you go about it. You can buy replacement axle kits for something like $200 per side that include new CV's, boots, and half axles, or you can just buy single CV's for around $40-50 per unit. Frankly I'd rather pay the extra $100/axle so I didn't have to mess with packing the CV's and making sure evertying is going together right.

When I did mine I just got 1 new CV end peice. It was quite easy to do, just pull the old one off the shaft, and put the new one on. You should also get new boots if you need them, new lube and new bolts.

I think for the 944 you can still get a kit which includes a new joint, boot and grease. That should fix you up fine. IMHO I would replace the other end at least as it is just as messy replace as to repack , and you know that shaft is done.

After swapping 2 CV's last weekend I can see the benefit in buying a full axle. Getting the circlip off is about the most difficult part but not getting slimed with that nasty CV grease is almost worth the $34 extra for a pre-assembled unit. At least a new unit allows you to have a used emergency axle on hand if you ever completely toast a CV...not that you carry a spare one in your car but it at least puts you or a friend back on the road until parts arrive.

Rebuilt axles might be a good way to go to save some money and some messy work. Get a good chessehead/triple-square tool and some PB blaster to get the bolts out.

"MetalNerd" makes the best special tools for VAG cars. I've used their tripple square aka cheesehead on many cars

I have to change a CV as well, and all my Porsche mechanic friends say..put an axel in. I have done an Axel on a 911...very easy. Somebody provided a link with great prices on rebuilt items. http://www.944paradise.com/

I will order soon

Do both sides. If one broke, the other has the same miles most likely, and can't be too far behind, in my opinion.

What was the reason for "swaping sides" with the axles?

The story goes that if a CV is worn and making noise that the wear will probably be in the same spot on the outer housing. Swapping sides does nothing more than buy a little time. It piovides a new wear area but more than likely the CV is already out of tolerance by then and it's temporary at best. There's no free lunch but I'll take a cheap sandwich anyday if I'm waiting for parts.

Bah! You guys are soft! The hardest part was chasing a Snap-On truck around Boston for two hours to buy the ****ing triple-square bit! Lucky for you, I wrote up my trials and tribulations (and you can see exactly why they're telling you to buy a full shaft).

I gotta find a permanant site for this ****...sorshaismadhot.com isn't cutting it:

I had mad clackin'. Swapping the axles solved my problem. If you can afford it...buy new bolts. They're notorious for stripping, and if you ever want to take them out again you'll be glad you did.

Thanks for the advice, I have decided to go ahead and buy the full kit from paragon for both sides, and hopefully I wont have to worry with them for a long time after that. The terrible part was when I broke the thing 1/4 mile from my home and still had to pay the tow truck's $50 minimum charge.
