Question Release bearing shims

I'm putting my clutch together and have come across a question that has come up before, but didn't really get answered clearly.

How do you know how many shims to put on?

The answer seems to be either to keep the release bearing tight or to compensate for a resurfaced flywheel. The second one sounds more reasonable to me. I had my flywheel resurfaced, so should I go with two?

Any thoughts appreciated.

I went with as many shims that would fit and still get the circlip to seat fully. I just depress the PP on the floor with my knees and stack them up. Mine used all the provided shims from the kit on the 83 and I did not have the FW resurfaced. If the TO bearing is too loose it can rattle and cause uneven contact and wear on the PP fingers.

How many were there on the old PP? I think you're right about adding more for a resurfaced flywheel... I'd just listen to Steve's advice above.

Here is the word from Sach:

Set the throwout bearing on the bench, big end down. Place the three identical washers/shims on the bearing. Then add the conical, serrated shim...small opening down against the three shims, wide opening up towards the pressure plate. Add the pressure plate, then the thick, rabbited washer, then the snap ring that goes on more easily if someone presses down on pressure plate (which compresses that conical shim).

Why three identical spacers instead of one? For that matter, why a spacer at all? According to Sach... Porsche designed it that way.
