Default check engine light [!] Alternator trigger this?

the reason i suspect alternator off the back is because my voltage also dropped to 10-ish and the red light was on there... so i turned off the radio, and wipers and whatnot, the lights went off, but the voltage was just a hair above 10. (should be 13.9-ish if memory serves correctly) So im wondering if the alternator will trigger that light to come on also.

any troubleshooting i can do to be sure its bad, or should i look at something else first? i have a friends car here, and he doesnt want me to throw his in there (dont ask) but im doing body work and it aint going nowhere so i may just toss his in and see if the problem goes away before dropping 175$

...unless someone has a spare they wanna sell me cheap and can get to me fast... my "backup" vehicle, 94 S-10 is broken and something goofy is wrong with it we still havent figured out.. so im running out of cars to drive to work and school

Yes, it sounds like the alternator might be going bad.
