just accept that it's a relatively slow car and you can't do much about it except lose weight.

Relatively slow off the line, but not in the corners. If you like dragging and low end grunt, this car is not for you. Don't bother trying to make it what it will never be, enjoy it for what it is.

I can't help but think that the low-end gearing has some part to play in the mediocre off-the-line performance... first to second is always the most awkward shift point for me, because the engine spins up like crazy but you're really not moving that quick in first. 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th, the car pulls like hell... as someone else pointed out, keep it working up around 4000 RPM and above, and you're really scooting.

Has anyone done any gearbox tinkering to change (improve?) the first gear ratio, or are there more complex forces at play here?

the rookie has been running his 87 944s at 4000 rpms, and yes the engine seems to respond better at a higher rpm..
