Is it possible you didnt have the compression gauge properly seats? Are you sure you did the head torque correctly?

Well I just checked the timing, lined the camshaft mark up then checked TDC in the flywheel hole, nowhere to be seen. Then looked in the starter hole, nowhere to be seen. The belt had perfect tension though, and was probally overtensioned a little.

There went my last 944

Rock, rotate the engine another 180 degrees. Two rotations of the cam for every one of the crank. Then check again.

well the mark goes by pretty fast. are you doign it all yorself? arent there a good bit of rennlisters in va to help?
my girlfriend at the time stopped helpign me look for the line, but i was able to get the wrench, turn it, laying on top of the engine/fender, lookign for the timing mark on top with a flash light in the winter. if i remember correctly, youre a little taller than me, so id think you might be able to do this also, but maybe with less stretchign to the ratchet on the crank.
take all of your plugs out so (just in case) the compression wont make the crank want to pop over and be easy, then pop over, or more than likely youll miss the mark.
i think it was andy and john"special tool"(hasnt posted for a while) that told me to have the line sitting on TOP of the pointer in the bellhousing, and about 1.5 before the pointer on the cam housing.
hopefully youll get it figured out without too much money/work.

Rock,

Have you heard of the pencil test? You stick something down the #1 cyl plug hole and make sure that it is at the top of it's rotation. Nice way to double check things before you get too far in. When re-building the '83 Eric and I had a hard time finding the timing mark on the flywheel so we set things by using the pencil test THEN we were able to find the mark.

I would re-do the compression test, just to be sure.

However after my timing belt slipped, and I bent the valves, my compression test was zero.

This is all on the 2.0 though. But try re-doing the compression test.

You got it backwards. It's two revs of the crank per rev of the cam. If the cam is lined up to the mark, the crank should be at TDC. Like the others said, the mark goes by quick, so an extra set of eyes would be a help.

I think you're just doing the compression check wrong, unless the above isn't true. Then you're dooooomed.
