Engine Stuck: That german bastard will not come out!
Operation make my car not suck is stuck.
I have everything taken apart, hoist is in place, hood is off. Engine is supposed to come out the top.
Just start throwing out ideas of things I may have missed, as listing everything is really just prohibitive. I was so stoked and then . No dice. Maybe tomorrow.

umm.. you did move ten engine forward enough that the whole shaft from the torque tube is out right? it sticks into the engine...
you unbolted the slave cylinder brake fluid line right? fuel lines? AC lines?

Devon, I am thinking that I am stuck on the torque tube. I am not sure how I am going to move it forward as I just left the cross-over and attached and just unbolted the motor-mounts from the cross-over.
In short, I am exhausted as I have been rolling around the floor of the garage for two days. Got a late start today. So, I wouldn't count on me to pull your engine.

i would unbolt the arms that go from the block to the engine mounts from the mounts, its two 13mm bolts on each side or something like that. the engine has to go forward a good 6 inches or so. You're probably going to have to pull your headlight bar, and maybe even the radiator to get the front cam housing to clear.
disclaimer: i have not taken one out the top without cutting the front of the car off, i went out th ebottom and cut things out of my way on the parts car to go out the top.

Travis and I seem to think the thing to do is to go ahead and unbolt the cross over and it *should* go down enough to clear the studs that are on the bottom of motor mounts. Then the engine goes a little forward and out?

I just pulled my motor out from the top about a week ago. I got to the point you were at and got stuck on the torque tube shaft. You need the radiator out but the headlight assembly can stay. I had to drop the subframe crossmember to be able to pull the motor far enough forward, otherwise the oil pan just hit it. Its pretty easy to do, i left the controlla rms attached to the knuckles, i unbolted the 4 main bolts and the 4 holding the controll arms tot he chassis then let it drop enough for teh oil pan to clear it. i let teh crossmember sit on 2 extra jack stands so it wouldnt stress the strut mounts.
from that point you can pull the motor off the torque tube shaft and it will be free!

After pulling 9 engines out of the parts cars, here is the best way I have found to do it out the top. First, I assume the cross member is out of the way. Next, pull the rad and fans. Pull the engine all the way forward. Tilt the engine down as far as you can. This will give you a couple of more inches to pull forward, this will clear the torque tube. Next put the engine back level after you are sure the TT is clear. At this point start lifting it up. When you get to the headlight bar, start tilting the front of th engine up as far as you can. Then, push the engine back, and turn the engine slightly about a 1/4 of a turn. This is where you need a shoe horn taking out the top. With the engine tilted up as far as possible, start lifting again. Make sure you don't crush your heater control valve (replaced many at this point). You will have to start working it back and forth, and it will come out.

Juan, I am doing this to avoid thinking. LOL.
This has actually been a lot of fun because I haven't had to think very hard for the last few days and I have just been taking stuff apart.
My 88 year old grandmother suffers from a very very bad short term memory. So, each time she opens the door to the garage, the car is more taken apart. "What the hell are you doing?" Each time it is a bigger suprise.
Oh, and we couldn't eat breakfast on the porch yesterday or today, because my exhaust and radiator are out there. My hood is in the living room.

Andrew,
Take it out the bottom, using the Hayne/Clarks method. But, do take off the alternator. And do loosen the radiator bracket (what it sits on). The latter will assist you with the critcal extra half inch when you reinstall it.

haynes version-
1- disconnect negative battery terminal
2- remove everything attatched to engine
3- remove engine from car.
installation is reverse of removal.
