Default catalytic converter

hello all, i am doing my homework on changing the exhaust /muffler assembly. i have a 'fart can' on and it's way too loud. i am going with a flowmaster series 60,made for imports.
while underneath i found an issue with the cat converter.seems it has been replaced with a generic unit. the installer mounted it 90deg to normal orientation, so it hits the tunnel slightly. ok,,,,here's my question; if i remove the heat shielding can i use exhaust wrap to keep the heat down?

thanks for your time

Robin

Why not just get a used stock cat? I found one with headers attached for $30 at a swap meet. Now the engine puts out about 10% of allowable emissions limits.
