Default Solid trans mount - Steel

Anybody fabricated steel solid trans mount for 944?
I am considering solid mount but am having trouble justifying cost of new lightweight aluminum ones available.
I have welding/fabrication abilities and equipment.
I can't imagine even If I constructed it from 1/4" plate that it would weight much more than a stock mount. Hell could probably even use stock mount, remove rubber, fit a couple pieces of heavy steel and weld it up

anybody done it??? or have thoughts??
anybody got a busted trans mount they want to send my way

I did this, but really didn't do it for weight savings. I have solid motor mounts and didn't like the idea of one end of the torque tube twisting and not the other. I looked at all the pics available of others out there, Kokeln, Huntley, and Lindsey and thought it looked pretty simple. I welded plates into a "T" shape and used some tubing as reinforcement.

I know on the early style that uses two mounts there are voids in the rubber that can be filled with something to firm them up. McMaster Carr sells a couple different Shore hardnesses of urethane that can be used for this purpose, perhaps that might be another approach.

EXACTLY!!

I don't want to pay that much to save 14 ounces (or whatever it is) of weight but want the sloid mount benefit.

So I have to ask.... did you notice significant increase in vibration or "road feel" after welding solid?

I'll tell you, if you daily drive your 944, you do NOT want the solid mount. I the Kokeln one and DAMN my transaxle is significantly louder now.

I have to agree with MPD47. I milled one out of aluminum and it was way to loud for every day driving. Put the stock one back in.

MPD47

How much louder do you think it is? As substancial a difference as removing the insulated rear carpet vs when in car?

manning - thanks for info... that is somthing for me to roll around in my head for a while

kwdrus and MPD47
Thanks for the input about noise.......
I think If I can come up with an extra dead mount I wouldn't mind putting one together for solo and DE events while still having my unmolested one for street if I deem in too unpleasant for street.

I have a .wav file, going through a couple of gears at a little better than normal driving speeds. If you want me to email it to you, pm me. I have no interior since it's nearly all track. The combination is quite loud. Sometimes, (at GF request) I throw in the back carpet with that thick pad which helps alot. I too wonder how loud it would be if all the interior was there.
