Looks like someone went through the trouble of dropping a Turbo motor in an NA: eBay auction. I'm really curious as to how much people will be willing to pay for this car.

 

I wonder if it's a 951 motor dropped in a N/A chassis or a modified N/A motor.

I know where you can get an 86 with a completely rebuilt motor done by a highly respected shop for <$5k, if he still has it. I believe he said it could use a repaint, but the drivetrain should be very solid.

This cool character, probably around my age (~20) took me for a ride in his N/A with a 951 motor in it at 944 fest. He did it all himself in a short period of time. It's not difficult at all if you know what you're doing.

 

It sounds and looks pretty nice. Even has LSD from a Turbo. Upgrade the brakes and you have an almost 951. I can believe he has 8K into it so I'd be surprised if the reserve is much less than that.

 

This is "my car" and it's as good as it gets if you want a "turbo charged" 944. There is no difference in how a NA engine rides in a chassis or a turbo engine. That's why it's easy to perform. The body (1988) is in great shape inside and out. I added the LSD w/ cooler and it make a world of driving difference, plus it's a strong LSD. I was looking to get between $5-6K but if i don't get it I'll be parting out and dumping a beautiful 944 into the landfill. There's a clean title and the engine is tight. The best part is coming up to other cars of "greater value" and blowing them into your mirrors!(Yes even you 951 types.) If you're interested PM me.

 

I saw that car at Anderson Motorworks 3 years ago. Good drop in. David I didn't know you owned the car. Why are you selling it? You have a very clever innovation and upgrade on your hands there!

 

Maybe Anderson Motorworks got lucky on 1 install, but I wouldnt look into using them for anything.

 

It did sell on eBay for a very modest price. The Owner knows he got a deal and is ecstatic. Once he got in the car and took it for a spin he was happy that he didn't spend an additional 5-6K for a "real" turbo (but there again this is a "real" turbo without the body parts).

On the Gas: AWM is an interesting business needless to say. John personally built this engine for me and when "John" builds a engine there aren't too many out there that can do it better. Point - you want John to do all the work - not his staff.

Mongo - this paves the way for our second Spec944 car. I needed the funds to sponsor the build. I hated to see this car go, but I want to race!

 

how much would it cost to drop a 951 into an early 944 or 924S? including buying motor, transmisson and brakes? to have a shop do it verses doing it yourself? how would the wiring harnesses/brain work?

 

Probably $10-$12K at a shop, $6k or so at home. A lot depends on the upgrades/maintenance/while you are at it type stuff. If you can find a wrecked 951 for cheap you might be able to do it for a few thousand and a few hundred hours of work, swapping stuff and selling leftover parts. It'd be a huge pain.

You use the brain and harness from the 951 for this swap.

Not to split hairs here.. but the only thing "turbo" about that car is the engine. The 951 was all over a different car. Brakes, tranny, suspension, body. Important upgrades made for a reason! I think 951 owners would agree.

Have you ever seen the old turbo ad with the complete tear-down? It is certainly an all together different car (vs. 944 na).

That leaves me to wonder, how long will everything else last now that it is stressed?
