I'm a member, but typically only post in the 911 forums. This summer I'm thinking about a 944.
How large is the 944 sunroof, was a glass moonroof ever offered, and which years of the 944 should be avoided?
Thanks in advance for your help, and let me know if I should consider another DIY p-car that offers a larger moonroof.

It's #@$%&^ huge and by #@$%&^, I mean frikkin! I've had mine out all day and it turns the car into a pseudo drop-top or targa! I'd say it's easily 3'X2'...the only thing Porsche should've done is made the forward section a little more open - you'll know what I mean should you live wisely and by a 944!
The glass roof was a r-a-r-e option and very coveted....you can find them but if you want to retrofit one to a standard sunroofs opening, it'll likely cost you upwards of $500!
Just ask Rich Sandor

Big, huge, massive, large, gigantic, vast, mammoth, colassol, titanic, enormous... I'm sure there are some other adjectives I'm leaving out. Big enough for my kids in the back seat to be able to stick their arms out anyways.
The glass roof is refered to as the 'Saragoga Top' as I believe that was the name of the company that produced it. They pop up now and again. Very expensive and rare. If someone could produce a quality replica there would be a lot of buyers out there.
The 944 series is a good DIY car but can be trying at times. Have you considered a cab? The S2 or 968 would be great drop tops!

Yeah the moonroofs are pretty rare and bring in a nice chunk of change on ebay.
The removeable portion of the roof is probably about 85% the total area up there. Very open feeling with it off. However... even with the windows down and the roof off, there is barely any wind problem in the 944 compared to a convertible. I love it. With the roof off, windows down, and the glass hatch, you have a really open atmosphere. There is a lot of space in the 944, and compared to the 911s, they feel way more modern. The 911 has a solid tank feel, where the 944 is still solid...but it feels way more nimble and agile. All years are great. They just kept getting better, but you can't go wrong with any of them I feel.
Here is a shot of the roof so you can see how big it is!

man you guys need to hit the weight room!
also i'm one of those people that have looked into recreating the glass top. the only issue i'm running into is the latches, because either i could go with some crappy looking ones that work well but would kinda downgrade the appeal of the item, or i could have a company custom make some for me and that seems...well difficult. i've looked into it a great deal and will possibly use my saratoga top as a mold this summer. i've got no time for it now.
